HU Baseball Splits GAC Doubleheader at SAU

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Harding baseball, ranked 28th in the latest Collegiate Baseball News poll, split a Great American Conference doubleheader Saturday against 26th-ranked Southern Arkansas.

Harding won the opener 13-11 and fell 2-0 in game two.

For the second straight game, Harding jumped up to a big lead on Southern Arkansas.

Harding (14-7, 7-5) tied a school record for hits in a conference game with 23 in game one, its highest total of the season. Each of the Bisons' top three hitters—Kyle Atkins, Trent Wooldridge, and Billy Ninemire—had four hits. Ninemire and Matt Calhoun each had five RBI.

Harding senior starting pitcher Lucas Waddell (2-1) went six innings and broke the school record for career wins with 23. Matt Walter (2000-03) held the record of 22.

The Bisons scored five runs in the top of the third to erase an early 1-0 deficit. Harding had seven hits in the inning, including a two-run single by Ninemire, and led the rest of the game.

Harding stretched its lead to 10-2 in sixth as Calhoun hit his first career grand slam. It was his second home run of the season and the first grand slam by a Harding player in a conference game since Adam Darby's slam against Henderson State in 2009.

Ninemire's two-run double in the seventh gave the Bisons a 12-3 lead. Southern Arkansas (17-9, 11-3) responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning, but Harding held on to earn the victory.

Brady Capshaw was 4-for-5 with five RBI to lead the Muleriders.

The victory for Harding was its first in Magnolia since 2006, a string of 10 games.

Both teams had only four hits in game two.

Southern Arkansas starting pitcher Philip Menou (5-1) pitched a seven-inning complete game, striking out 10 and walking only two.

Harding starter Hayden Shirley (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season despite pitching well. He gave up two earned runs and struck out four in five innings.

David Harris hit a solo home run in the first inning, and Johnny Garrett walked with the bases loaded in the third inning to account for the Muleriders' scoring.

Harding plays its fourth straight road game Wednesday at nationally-ranked Delta State in Cleveland, Miss. The Bisons host Arkansas-Monticello next Friday and Saturday in GAC play.
