SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Harding volleyball team opened its 2013 campaign with a 3-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Friday in the Cal State-San Bernardino Tournament. HU is now 12-5 in season openers. The Lady Bisons dropped its second match of the day against Sonoma State 3-1.
In the first match, senior outside hitter Mollie Arnold captured a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs. Senior defensive specialist Lisa Copeland led the Harding defense with 20 digs. It was the eighth time in her career she has had 20 or more digs in a match.
The Lady Bisons held Cal Poly Pomona to a .087 hitting percentage. Harding forced 20 attack errors. HU middle blocker Alyssa Short had five blocks.
In the second match, Arnold led Harding with 11 kills. Junior middle blocker Liv Savage had 10 kills and also hit .348. Junior setter Taryn Eubank had 35 assists and eight kills for HU.
Sonoma State had three players finish in double figure kills. Caylie Seitz led the Seawolves with 19. Kelsey Hull captured a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs. She also led the team in hitting with a .440 hitting percentage. Regan Richert had 12 kills.
Harding had 25 hitting errors and five service errors in the match.
The Lady Bisons will wrap up the tournament tomorrow as they take on California-San Diego at 2 p.m., central time and then face California State-Los Angeles at 7 p.m., central time.
