MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The 25th-ranked Harding women's basketball team defeated Christian Brothers 69-42 in its final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday. The Lady Bisons improved to 9-2 overall with the win.
It was Harding's fifth straight win, dating back to Dec. 4 when the Lady Bisons beat Southern Arkansas 74-53. Harding also improved its road record to 3-1 as the Lady Bisons only loss came at then ranked No. 8 West Texas A&M, 67-65 on Nov. 29th.
Freshman forward Sydney Layrock came off the bench and led Harding with a game-high 16 points, hitting 6-of-9 from the field.
Three other Lady Bisons finished in double-figures. Senior guard Montana Lewis had 11 points and senior forward Arielle Saunders and sophomore guard A'ndrea Haney each had 10 points. Saunders captured her seventh double-double of the season as she finished with a game-high 12 rebounds.
Christian Brothers (4-8) was led by Rachel Lee who had 11 points and six rebounds.
After shooting 29.0 percent in the first half (9-of-31), Harding came out of the locker room after halftime and shot 48.1 percent (13-of-27) in the second half. The Lady Bisons led 30-14 at the half.
The Harding defense held Christian Brothers to shooting 29.8 percent in the game (17-of-57) and had a season-high nine blocks. Saunders, who is the Lady Bisons all-time blocks leader, led Harding with three. Lewis added two more and four other Lady Bisons had one block.
Harding led the entire game for only the second time this season. The Lady Bisons led the the whole way in a 65-40 non-conference win over Delta State earlier this season.
Harding had great production out of its bench in the game as six Lady Bisons combined for 27 points. The Lady Bucs only had six points.
Harding will be back in action on Saturday as they resume Great American Conference play at Ouachita Baptist. Tip-off is schedule for 1 p.m.
