BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Harding men's soccer team set a school record for goals in a conference road game with a 6-1 victory over Southwest Baptist in MIAA action on Thursday at SBU Soccer Field.
The Bisons improved to 2-2-1 overall and remained undefeated in conference play at 2-0-0. Harding is 2-0-1 on its current four-game road trip, which concludes Saturday with an MIAA game at No. 16 Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla.
Harding scored three goals in each half with the goals coming from five different players. Senior Cole Walker scored goals in each half for his second career two-goal game.
Redshirt freshman Daniel Gamboa scored his first collegiate goal in the 6th minute, with senior Jacob Stevens making it 2-0 in the 30th minute. Walker scored his first goal on a penalty kick just over 30 seconds before halftime.
Southwest Baptist (0-8-0, 0-3-0) struck back with a goal from Justin Schaeffer, his team-leading fourth of the season, in the 64th minute to cut Harding's lead to 3-1.
Less than two minutes later, Harding tacked on another. Sophomore Barry Foster scored on an assist from Jackson Buchanan in the 66th minute to give the Bisons a 4-1 advantage. Foster has scored in consecutive games and has scored twice in his career against Southwest Baptist.
Harding broke the previous record for goals scored in a conference road game with the fifth goal coming in the 77th minute. Walker scored his second on an assist from Ian Park and broke the record of four goals in a 4-0 victory at Alabama-Huntsville in 2008.
Walker, who now has three goals and an assist in two games against Southwest Baptist, provided the assist on freshman Van Cung's first collegiate goal in the 83rd minute.
Harding and Southwest Baptist play another conference match on Oct. 23 in Searcy.
