DALLAS – Dallas Baptist sophomore Landon Lacy scored in the 85th minute to give the Patriots a 2-1 victory over Harding in the season opener for both men's soccer teams.
Harding (0-1) will be back in action Tuesday at 7 p.m. for its home opener against Ouachita Baptist.
After a scoreless first half, Dallas Baptist (1-0) took the lead in the 58th minute on a goal by freshman midfielder Michael Andrews.
"It came off a set piece, and we just did not do a good job of clearing it," Harding head coach Odie Guzman said.
Harding answered just over five minutes later with sophomore Dylan Sherrill tying the game at 1-1 with his second career goal. Sherrill recovered a loose ball in the box and scored from seven yards out.
"Dylan's goal was very similar to Dallas Baptist's goal," Guzman said. "He just recovered it in the box and slotted it home."
The tide of the game turned in the 64th minute when Harding's Kevin Pineda received a red card for a hard tackle, leaving the Bisons a man down the rest of the game. Harding fended off several Dallas Baptist scoring opportunities until Lacy scored the game-winner.
"The red card definitely changed the game," Guzman said. "We were holding them, but we also had a couple chances going forward. In the last six minutes we started losing our grip on their players and giving them more possession. The last goal came on a play where we should have cleared the ball out of the box and didn't."
Both teams had 12 shots and five shots on goal. Sherrill led Harding with three shots, all on goal.
Redshirt freshman Thomas Shults made his first collegiate start for the Bisons and made three saves in goal. Freshman Aaron Craig also received his first start at defender.
