Kavas Notches Fourth Double-Double in Road Loss to Southeastern Oklahoma

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma made nine straight shots over a six-minute stretch of the second half and erased an 11-point Harding lead in a 71-67 victory over the Bisons in Great American Conference play Saturday at Sullivan Arena.

Southeastern (7-8, 3-4) shot 63 percent in the second half and defeated Harding for the seventh straight time in Durant.

"I know our team is hurting right now," Harding head coach Jeff Morgan said. "The same way we were last season when we left this place."

Harding (5-8, 3-4) made two late 3-pointers to pull within two points with eight seconds remaining, but Southeastern's Anton Cook made two free throws with five seconds left to seal the victory.

"We showed a lot of improvement today," Morgan said. "We did not shoot the ball well, but we gave ourselves a chance to win. That is something we have not done this season when we did not shoot well."

The Bisons return to Searcy for a four-game homestand beginning Thursday against East Central. Tipoff at the Rhodes Field House is at 7:30 p.m.

Harding led 38-27 with 14:37 left as John Hudson made a 3-pointer and was fouled. He hit the free throw to give the Bisons their largest lead of the game.

Southeastern, who had made only 10 of their first 35 field goal attempts in the game, made 12 of their next 13 and went on a 20-4 run. Danny Powell made a layup with 8:56 left that was the ninth straight made basket for the Savage Storm. It gave his team its first lead, 47-45, since early in the first half.

During the Southeastern run, the game was delayed for more than eight minutes as officials used the replay monitor to see if a foul was given to the appropriate player. After the delay, Southeastern took its largest lead of the game on two Taylor Smaller free throws with 4:13 remaining. The free throws gave the Storm a 62-51 advantage.

Harding limited Southeastern to only 28 percent shooting in the first half and led 25-20 at the break. The 20 points were the fewest allowed by the Bisons in the first half of a game this season.

Andraz Kavas and Jacob Gibson combined to score 19 of Harding's 25 first-half points. Kavas had 11, and Gibson scored eight. The Bisons were only 1-of-8 from 3-point range in the first half and 7-of-26 from 3-point range in the game.

Kavas finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds, his fourth double-double of the season. Gibson scored 17.

Smaller and Sami Bzai scored 17 points each. Bzai hit 5-of-8 from 3-point range.
