ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Harding junior Harrison Hunter had his second straight three-hit game, and junior Collin Campbell pitched eight shutout innings to lead the Bisons to a 3-0 victory over Henderson State on Friday in the Great American Conference opener for both teams.
The series concludes Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
Harding (5-2, 1-0) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Junior Kyler Offenbacker reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Hunter reached on a bunt single to move Offenbacker to third. Junior John Chapman scored Offenbacker on a squeeze bunt than moved Hunter to second. Hunter moved up on a ground out and scored on Davis Richardson's ground ball to shortstop.
Hunter made it 3-0 in the seventh, singling home senior Shane Kinnear, who walked to lead off the inning.
Campbell completely shut down a Henderson State (4-1, 0-1) offense that averaged over seven runs per game in winning its first four games of the season. The Reddies did not have a runner reach second base.
Campbell allowed only three hits, all singles, walked one and struck out four to improve to 2-0 on the season. He has not allowed a run in 13 2-3 innings this season and is 2-0 in his career against the Reddies with a 0.95 ERA in 19 innings.
Junior Hunter Payne relieved Campbell in the ninth and pitched a perfect inning for his first save.
Harding's pitching staff already has three shutouts in its first seven games and has a 0.89 ERA.
