ALVA, Okla. – Northwestern Oklahoma sophomore Adrian Motley made two free throws with 22.7 seconds left to give the Rangers a 66-65 victory over Harding in Great American Conference play Thursday at Percefull Fieldhouse.
Harding led for almost 34 minutes of the game, but Northwestern's Darrian Dempsey hit a layup with 54.7 seconds left to tie the game at 64-64.
John Hudson made the second of two free throws on Harding's next trip to give the Bisons a 65-64 lead with 32.3 second remaining. Motley hit his free throws to put the Rangers in the lead, and Harding could not score on its final possession.
The Bisons did not have a field goal in the second half after Reggie Anthony's 3-pointer with 7:17 remaining that gave Harding a 59-52 lead.
"They finished plays and we didn't," Harding head coach Jeff Morgan said. "That was the difference down the stretch. We had a few plays that we just didn't finish."
Harding (11-9, 9-5) had its six-game winning streak snapped and suffered its sixth loss this season by four points or fewer. The Bisons, who dropped two spots to fourth place in the GAC standings, play five of their last seven games on the road and continue a two-game Oklahoma trip at Southwestern Oklahoma on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Northwestern (6-15, 5-9) snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 6-3 at home.
Harding had four players with 10 or more points and was led by junior Blake McNair's 17 points. McNair made four of Harding's 10 3-pointers. The Bisons made a school-record 21 3-pointers in the first meeting between the teams, a 92-72 victory at Rhodes Field House on Dec. 18.
Andraz Kavas had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Harding, his fifth double-double of the season. Hudson made four 3-pointers and scored 13 points, and Anthony tied his season high with 10 points.
Northwestern did most of its damage in the low post, outscoring Harding 32-10 in the paint. Motley and T'aries Taylor each had 18 points for the Rangers, who won despite shooting only 6-of-15 at the free throw line.
