DURANT, Okla. – Junior Zac Stewart hit a second-inning grand slam, one of three Harding home runs, but the Bisons could not hold an early lead and lost 15-11 to Southeastern Oklahoma on Saturday in the first of a three-game Great American Conference series.
Southeastern improved to 8-8 overall and 4-4 in GAC games, and Harding fell to 9-12 overall and 4-4 in conference.
The teams will play a doubleheader Sunday at noon to conclude the series.
Stewart went 3-for-6 with three runs and a career-high five RBIs.
Stewart singled and scored on Noah Chandler's home run in the first inning. In the second Harding loaded the bases when three consecutive hitters were hit by pitches. Stewart hit Harding's first grand slam since the 2013 season, and the Bisons led 6-2 after two innings.
An RBI triple in the fourth was Stewart's third hit. He later scored on a wild pitch and the Bisons had an 8-2 advantage.
Southeastern scored multiple runs in four of the last five innings and took a 12-10 lead with five runs in the seventh. The Savage Storm, who had 19 hits in the game, scored three more in the eighth to put the game away.
Two of the top pitchers in the GAC both had tough outings Saturday. Southeastern starter Dylan Linke (1-0) had only allowed one earned run in 18 1-3 innings entering the game, but gave up 10 earned runs in seven innings. Linke received the win, exiting the game after Southeastern's comeback was complete.
Harding starter Collin Campbell was fourth in the GAC with a 1.76 ERA, but he did not make it out of the fifth inning. Campbell gave up seven runs on nine hits in 4 2-3 innings. Bison reliever Hunter Payne (1-2) suffered the loss after yielding five runs (two earned) in two innings.
Alan Copeland hit Harding's third home run of the game, a solo shot to lead off the fifth. It was Harding's first multi-home run game of the season and the first time the Bisons hit three or more in a game since blasting four home runs against Southern Nazarene last season.
Copeland and Kyler Offenbacker both had two hits for the Bisons.
Chance Burcham was 4-for-4 with four runs scored, four RBIs, and two home runs to lead the Savage Storm. Brandon Grimsley also had four hits and four RBIs.
