MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Southern Arkansas managed only one hit in 15 at-bats with runners on base against Harding on Friday, but that hit—a Carver Rademacher double in the eighth—set up the only run in the Muleriders 1-0 victory over the Bisons.
The three-game series concludes Saturday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
Harding, who entered the series in third place in the conference standings, fell to 15-15 overall and 7-6 in GAC games. Southern Arkansas, in second in the conference, improved to 21-11 overall and 10-6 in the GAC.
Southern Arkansas had its leadoff batter reach in five of the game's first seven innings, but Harding starter Andrew Fiddler pitched out of trouble each time. Fiddler allowed only five hits in seven scoreless innings, and his only strikeout came against the last batter he faced.
But Harding's good fortune ended in the eighth.
Junior Hunter Payne (2-3) relieved Fiddler, and Southern Arkansas' Billy Germaine greeted him with a single up the middle. Rademacher followed with what proved to be the key hit in the game, doubling to left and sending pinch runner Renaldo Morris over to third. Payne walked Trevor Rucker, who was 3-for-3 in the game, intentionally to load the bases, and Chris Quinn lofted a fly ball to left to score Morris on a sacrifice fly. Harding's second double play of the game prevented any more runs.
Harding managed six hits off Southern Arkansas starter Landon Simpson (5-3), who pitched his third complete game shutout of the season. Noah Chandler and Davis Richardson both went 2-for-4, but Harding did not have a runner reach third base after the first inning.
