Harding Softball Drops Suspended Game and Doubleheader to Henderson State on Senior Day

SEARCY – The Harding softball team fell 5-4 (14 innings), 5-2 and 7-1 to Henderson State on Saturday in Great American Conference action. After the games, the Lady Bisons recognized three seniors for their contributions to the Harding softball program – Carolyn Clayton, Jessica Greene and Amber Rollins

Harding falls to 18-24 overall and 12-14 in the GAC.  Henderson State who sits atop the GAC standings improves to 30-8 overall and 21-5 in the GAC.

The Lady Bisons are currently in fifth place in the conference standings as the top eight teams advance to the GAC Tournament held in Bentonville, Arkansas April 30 through May 2.

SUSPENDED GAME

It took two innings to wrap up the suspended second game from Friday as Henderson State won 5-4 in 14 innings. The game was suspended after the 12th innings due to darkness in Searcy on Friday.

The game set a new GAC record for the most innings in a game. The previous record was 13 set in 2013 as Arkansas-Monticello defeated Southern Arkansas 7-6.

Henderson State drove in a run in the top of the 14th when Ashlyn White hit a single to score Kierston Daniels from second.

The Reddies had 17 hits in the game and the Lady Bisons had eight.

Michelle Sorensen picked up the win for Henderson State, pitching eight innings in relief as she gave up three hits and one run. She walked three batters and struck out six. Amber Rollins came in the seventh and pitched eight innings. She gave up six hits, one run and struck out five.

Amanda Berdon was the only Harding player with two hits as she went 2-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI.

GAME ONE

Henderson State jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three and hung on to defeat Harding 5-2 with 13 hits.

Harding's first run came in the fourth when Marley Edwards was walked with the bases loaded and one out. The Reddies got out of the inning as they got a fly out and a strike out.

The Lady Bisons second run came in the seventh when Marley Edwards hit her third home run of the season to right field.

Tricia Hock went 3-for-4 in the game with a run scored for Henderson State.

Michelle Sorensen recorded her 15th win of the season pitching four innings. She gave up four hits, an earned run and struck out two. Ashlyn White got her first save of the season. She pitched three innings and gave up two hits and an earned run. Amber Rollins got the loss for Harding as she falls to 12-11 on the season. She gave up four earned runs and struck out four.

Kimmy Hendricks went 1-for-3 in the game.

GAME TWO

Henderson State scored three runs in the second and four in the fifth to defeat Harding 7-1.

The Lady Bisons got on the board in the bottom of the first when Kimmy Hendricks hit a solo home run to left field. It was her fifth home run of the season and she extended her streak of reaching bases to 19 straight games.

Henderson State held Harding scoreless the rest of the way.

Ali Hargis got the win for Henderson State to improve her record to 6-0. She threw her first complete game of the season as she only gave up three hits and struck out two. Danielle Hubbard got the loss for Harding pitching 4 1/3 innings. Taylor Friend came in for Harding and pitched 2 2/3 innings. She gave up one hit and struck out two.

Taylor Daniels went 2-for-4 for the Reddies, including a three run home run in the fifth inning.

Harding will be back in action on Monday as they host Williams Baptist in a non-conference doubleheader scheduled for 2 p.m.
