Harding Men's Basketball Drops Season Opener in Oklahoma

BETHANY, Okla. – Minnesota State Moorhead erased Harding's seven-point second-half lead and held off a late Harding charge to defeat the Bisons 82-76 at the Central Region Challenge hosted by Southern Nazarene. MSU Moorhead received votes in the NABC Division II Top 25 Preseason Coaches' Poll after winning 30 games last season.

Both Harding, a member of the Great American Conference, and MSU Moorhead, of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, are in the NCAA Division II Central Region. It was the first game of the season for both teams.

Harding plays its second game in the Challenge on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Northern State.

Harding trailed 43-32 at halftime but scored the first 11 points of the second half to tie the game. Junior newcomer Tim Wagner scored the first eight points, and sophomore Braden Eggleston hit a 3-pointer to cap the run. The Bisons shot only 30 percent from the field in the first half but improved to 49 percent in the second half.

Harding took its first lead since early in the first half on a Filip Medjo layup with 13:23 left that gave the Bisons a 47-46 advantage.

Two Wagner free throws with 8:41 left gave Harding a 60-53 lead, the Bisons' largest of the second half. Moorhead trailed 64-59 with 6:44 remaining, but went on a 12-0 run over the next two minutes, connecting on four consecutive 3-pointers, to take the lead for good.

Harding closed to within two points twice late in the game. Wagner made a 3-pointer with 1:57 left to cut the Moorhead lead to 76-74 and hit two free throws to make it 78-76 with 1:10 left. Moorhead answered with a 3-pointer from Ayob Ayob to seal the victory.

Team Stats
Harding tied a school record by making 16 free throws without a miss. The Bisons also made 16 free throws last season against Ouachita Baptist.

Moorhead made 15 3-pointers, including six from Jon Doss and five from Ayob. Harding had 10 3-pointers.

Individual Stats
Wagner, a junior transfer from North Platte Community College, led Harding with 22 points. He made 3-of-8 3-pointers and all seven free throws.

Senior Stefan Andelkovic scored 21 points and also made three 3-pointers.

Medjo and Will Francis led Harding with five assists each, and Eggleston had a team-high eight rebounds.

Moorhead had four players with 10 or more points, led by Jon Doss with 24 points.
