Harding Baseball Comeback Falls a Run Short in 5-4 Loss to Southeastern Oklahoma

SEARCY – Southeastern Oklahoma's Logan Terwilliger hit a grand slam in the Savage Storm's five-run third inning, and Harding's comeback fell one run short in a 5-4 loss Friday in the first game of a three-game Great American Conference series.

Harding and Southeastern will conclude the series Saturday with a noon doubleheader. Southeastern improved to 12-16 overall and 7-6 in the GAC. Harding fell to 11-14 overall and 5-8 in conference.

KEY INNINGS
  • Southeastern took a 5-0 lead in the third inning. Connor Counce led off the inning with a single and went to third on a Harding error. He scored the first run on Dylan Helms' single to right. The error, a single and a walk loaded the bases for Logan Terwilliger, who hit his fifth home run of the season, a grand slam, to left center.
  • Harding loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth, but were unable to score. A fielder's choice and a double play ground out shut down the Bisons' scoring opportunity.
  • Harding scored its first run in the seventh. Zac Stewart doubled with two outs and scored on Grant Guest's line-drive single to center, his 10th RBI of the season.
  • Harding's first two batters reached in the eighth inning and both scored. Richardson doubled to right and went to third on Grant Guest's single to right. Richardson scored on Harrison Hunter's infield ground out, and Guest scored on Zac Beasley's RBI triple. It was Hunter's ninth RBI and Beasley's fourth.
  • With one out in the ninth, Guest hit his first career home run to left to cut the Southeastern lead to one run. Harding had the tying run on base but did not score again.
KEY STATS
  • Terwilliger's grand slam was the second allowed this season by Harding. The other came at Oklahoma Baptist.
  • Zac Stewart had Harding's first hit, a single in the third. The hit gave him his second 10-game hitting streak of the season.
  • Stewart doubled with two outs in the seventh, his team-leading 10th double of the season. It also gave Stewart his seventh straight game with multiple hits.
  • Harding scored two runs in the eighth inning. In the previous 24 games this season, the Bisons had scored only one eighth-inning run.
  • Andrew Fiddler (2-4) started on the mound for Harding and did not allow a run other than the third inning. He gave up nine hits and walked one with four strikeouts. Fiddler has allowed more than four earned runs only once in eight starts this season.
  • Dylan Linke (3-2) pitched 7 2/3 innings for the Storm, and allowed eight hits and three earned runs. Brady Colbert worked around Guest's home run and earned his fifth save.
  • Stewart and Guest both had two hits. Stewart has a team-high 14 multi-hit games, and Guest is second with nine.
