Harding Baseball Wins Series of Northwestern, Splits Saturday Doubleheader

SEARCY – Harding won the first game of a Great American Conference doubleheader Saturday to clinch a two-games-to-one series victory Saturday over Northwestern Oklahoma. Harding won the opener 7-2, and Northwestern won game two 4-1. Harding won Friday's series opener 9-3.

Harding honored former head coach Dick Johnson in a pregame ceremony. Johnson received a plaque and was joined on the field by more than 20 of his former players.

With the series victory, Harding will remain in seventh place in the GAC standings among teams eligible for the conference tournament. The Bisons (20-22, 12-15) are one game behind seventh-place East Central and two games ahead of ninth-place Northwestern (13-30, 10-17).

Harding plays a non-conference game Tuesday at home against Arkansas-Monticello and will travel to Southwestern Oklahoma next weekend. Southwestern is currently in third place in the GAC standings.

KEY INNINGS, GAME ONE (Harding 7, Northwestern Oklahoma 2)
  • Harding scored two runs in the top of the first on only one hit, a one-out single to left by Harrison Hunter. Hunter scored on an error, one of two by Northwestern in the inning. Blake Coward reached on an error and later scored on a passed ball. Three Bisons walked in the inning, and Harding left the bases loaded.
  • Harding made it 4-0 in the fifth. The Bisons had three hits in the inning and again benefitted from a Northwestern error. Coward walked to lead off the inning, stole second, went to third on a throwing error and scored on Davis Richardson's single to center. Richardson went to third on Chris Taylor's double and scored on Zac Beasley's RBI single to left.
  • Northwestern scored single runs in the sixth and seventh to cut Harding's lead to 4-2.
  • A two-run triple by Zac Stewart in the eighth added two Harding's lead. His triple scored Alan Copeland, who singled to lead off the inning, and Noah Chandler who walked. Stewart scored Harding's final run on a wild pitch.
KEY STATS
  • Northwestern had three errors, three wild pitches, three hit batters and a passed ball.
  • Andrew Ralston (3-4) struck out six over six innings and allowed only three hits and one earned run in picking up the win. Ralston has a 1.38 ERA in his last two games, allowing only two earned runs in 13 innings with 13 strikeouts.
  • Harding relievers Jacob Stripling, Joshua Spears and Reed Roberts pitched an inning each in relief.
  • Hunter, Richardson and Taylor each had two hits for Harding.
  • Matt Bickford (0-4) remained winless in nine starts, allowing two earned runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings.
  • Northwestern's Tito Montano hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the seventh.
KEY INNINGS, GAME TWO (Northwestern 4, Harding 1)
  • Harding again took a lead in the first inning. Hunter singled with one out and came around to score on a wild pitch.
  • Northwestern scored all four of its runs in the fifth inning. Xyruse Martinez led off the inning with a single and scored on Montano's second home run of the game. Jacob Long extended the lead to 4-1 with a two-run, two-out single on a 2-2 count.
KEY STATS
  • Harding had only four hits in the game, three singles and a Chris Taylor double.
  • Hunter Payne (6-5) took the loss, allowing all four runs in the fifth. He pitched 4 2/3 innings, walked none and struck out four.
  • Robert Lawhon (6-6) pitched a complete game, striking out eight.
