Eighth-Inning Triples Lead to Harding Baseball Victory over Central Baptist

SEARCY – A pair of back-to-back triples by Blake Coward and Davis Richardson in the bottom of the eighth inning helped Harding overcome two home runs from Central Baptist second baseman Jalin Lawson and defeat the Mustangs 7-6 on Tuesday at Jerry Moore Field.

Harding improved to 15-20 overall, and Central Baptist, a NAIA school located in Conway, Arkansas and coached by former Bison pitcher Dr. Aaron Brister, fell to 29-11.

KEY INNINGS
  • With the scored tied 5-5, Coward led off the eighth with a triple to left center on the first pitch of the inning. Richardson then lined a triple to right center to score Coward with the eventual game-winning run. Zach Beasley singled to center to scored Richardson and give the Bisons a two-run lead.
  • Lawson, a junior, hit his second home run of the game in the top of the ninth to pull Central Baptist within a run. The Mustangs loaded the bases with two outs, but Harding reliever Reed Roberts got the last three outs for his fourth save.
KEY STATS
  • Harding used eight different pitchers in the game. Zac Stewart (2-3), the seventh pitcher, earned the win by working a scoreless eighth inning.
  • Stewart also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a single, his 11th double and his team-leading fourth home run to lead off the fifth inning. Needing a triple for the cycle, Stewart grounded out to shortstop in his last at-bat.
  • It was Stewart's team-leading 18th multi-hit game of the season.
  • Lawson, the NAIA's home run leader, hit his 17th and 18th. He is the first Harding opponent to hit two home runs at Jerry Moore Field this season.
  • Coward, Richardson and Beasley each had two hits for Harding.
  • Central Baptist reliever Ryan Smith (1-2) gave up the consecutive triples in the eighth and took the loss.
