Comeback Bisons Sweep Arkansas-Monticello in GAC Series

MONTICELLO, Ark. – Harding baseball started the weekend on the outside looking in when it came to qualifying for the Great American Conference Tournament. After a three-game road sweep of Arkansas-Monticello, who started the weekend in first place, Harding has climbed into the tournament picture.

The Bisons came from behind twice Saturday and defeated the Weevils 5-3 in 11 innings and 8-7 after winning 7-4 on Friday.

Harding improved to 18-20 overall and 10-14 in the GAC. The Bisons climbed two spots to seventh in the conference standings. Arkansas-Monticello, who was swept in a GAC series by Harding for the second straight season, fell to 22-11 overall and 14-7 in GAC games. The Weevils dropped into a second-place tie with Southwestern Oklahoma, one game behind new conference leader Southeastern Oklahoma.

GAME ONE KEY INNINGS (Harding 5, Arkansas-Monticello 3)
  • With the score tied at 3-3 entering the 11th inning, Harrison Hunter singled with one out to start Harding's rally. Hunter scored the go-ahead run on Grant Guest's double to left. The Bisons tacked on an insurance run with another double, this one by Jaxon Mohr that scored Guest.
  • Arkansas-Monticello got a runner on the bottom of the 11th and had the tying run at the plate, but Harding reliever Reed Roberts retired Nick Piraino on a ground out for the final out of the game.
  • Harding trailed 3-1 entering the ninth inning. Chris Taylor walked and scored on a two-out triple by Zac Stewart. With the Bisons still trailing by one and two outs, Hunter grounded to the first baseman Marshall McPherson. UAM pitcher Dawson Moser, covering the bag, dropped the throw from McPherson, and Stewart scored from third with the tying run.
  • Arkansas-Monticello had taken the lead with two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run single by Nick Cerda.
  • Harding's first run came in the sixth inning on a Noah Chandler sacrifice fly that scored Guest.
KEY STATS
  • Guest led the Harding offense by going 4-for-6 with two runs, an RBI and two doubles. It was his second four-hit game of the season. The doubles were his second and third of 2016.
  • Taylor was 3-for-4 with a run and a walk. It was his second straight three-hit game.
  • Harding had five two-out hits in the game, none more important than Stewart's RBI triple in the top of the ninth that helped the Bisons for extra innings.
  • Reed Roberts (2-1) did not allow a hit in working the 10th and 11th innings for the win.
  • Andrew Ralston started for the Bisons and was outstanding. He allowed only one earned run on two hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts. It was his longest start of the season.
  • Arkansas-Monticello reliever Kregg Snook gave up Harding's two runs in the 11th inning and dropped to 3-1.
  • UAM starter Brandon Chambers pitched 8 2/3 innings and threw 137 pitches.
GAME TWO KEY INNINGS (Harding 8, Arkansas-Monticello 7)
  • Trailing 7-4 entering the sixth inning, Harding scored four runs to take the lead for good. With one out Taylor walked and Zach Beasley singled. Jaxon Mohr's base hit up the middle scored Taylor for the first run. Davis Richardson pinch hit for John Chapman and launched a three-run home run, his second of the season, to left field.
  • Harding opened the game with three runs in the top of the first inning. The Weevils helped the Bisons with two errors, two passed balls and a wild pitch.
  • Arkansas-Monticello scored two in the bottom of the first and four in the second to take a 6-3 lead.
  • Harding scored a single run in the fourth. Taylor walked to lead off the inning and scored on a double play.
KEY STATS
  • Beasley was 3-for-3 with three singles to lead Harding's offense. It was his first three-hit game of the season and gave him a four-game hitting streak.
  • Mohr and Stewart had two hits each. Stewart has a team-best 19 multi-hit games.
  • After earning the win in game one, Roberts picked up the save in game two, pitching a perfect ninth. It was his sixth save of the season.
  • Jackson Ward earned his first collegiate win by getting the last out in the UAM fifth. He was the pitcher of record when Harding made its four-run comeback in the top of the sixth.
  • Evan Comeau was 3-for-4 to lead UAM.
