Baseball Bisons Homer Twice but Fall to UAM in GAC Tournament

Postgame Interview with Coach McGaha

MONTICELLO, Ark. – Harding seniors Zac Stewart and Davis Richardson both hit home runs, but a two-run home run by Arkansas-Monticello's Corey Wood proved the difference in the Weevils' 7-5 victory over the Bisons on Saturday in the Great American Conference Tournament at Weevil Field.

Arkansas-Monticello (33-14), the No. 2 seed in the tournament, won the first game of the best-of-three series 19-5 on Friday and advances to the GAC Tournament Final Four that begins Thursday in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

Harding (24-28) had its season come to an end. For several members of the team's 13-player senior class, it was their fourth straight season to reach postseason play.

Harding trailed 5-2 entering the fourth inning, but Richardson tied the game with his third home run of the season, scoring Noah Chandler and Chris Taylor, who had both singled.

UAM senior Kevin Fitzpatrick led off the bottom of the fourth with one of his four singles. Wood followed that by hitting a 1-0 over the green wall in right field for the eventual game-winning runs. It was the third home run of the series and 21st of the season for the GAC Player of the Year.

Brian Ray led off the bottom of the third with his eighth home run of the season, a line drive over the fence just to the left of straight away center field. Cerda followed that with a single to knock out Harding starter Andrew Ralston with no outs in the bottom of the third.

Harding cut a 4-0 lead in half in the top of the third. Stewart hit his seventh home run of the season with one out and Davis Richardson on first base. Stewart hit a 3-1 pitch over the 14-foot fence in right center field.

UAM loaded the bases with one out in the first. Harding starter Andrew Ralston got the potential double play ball he was looking for but an error allowed two runs to score. Nick Cerda and Travis Steinke followed that with back-to-back RBI singles to give the Weevils a four-run first inning.

Ralston left in the third after throwing 72 pitches. He allowed six hits and five runs, two earned and struck out two. Payne (6-7) struck out six and walked none in 5 1/3 innings of relief. The only two runs he allowed came on Wood's home run.

Braden Chambers improved to 11-0 for the Weevils. He allowed a season-high tying five earned run over six innings. Relievers Gavin Johnston, Chad Bradford and Dawson Moser each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Stewart was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs. He concluded his season with a school-record 27 multiple-hit games.
