ALVA, Okla. – Senior A'ndi Haney hit a late 3-pointer to give Harding the lead, and junior Falan Miller made another 3-pointer from the corner with 32 seconds left to give the 21st-ranked Lady Bisons a 67-64 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma on Saturday in Great American Conference play at Percefull Field House.
Harding trailed for much of the game but outscored Northwestern 18-9 in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory, its ninth in the last 10 games. With the win, Harding extended its lead in the GAC standings to two games over Arkansas Tech. The Lady Bisons are 15-3 overall and 13-1 in GAC games.
Northwestern lost to Harding for the 10th consecutive time and fell to 6-13 overall and 5-8 in the GAC. The Lady Rangers have lost four of their last five, but held a 63-61 lead over Harding with 2:15 left.
Haney's 3-pointer with 1:51 left came from the left wing with only one second left on the shot clock and gave the Lady Bisons a 64-63 lead, the 17th lead change of the game. Northwestern missed two shots on its next possession, and the 3-pointer by Miller extended Harding's lead to four points.
Northwestern's Ashley Pride made one of two free throws with 23 seconds left to cut Harding's lead to 67-64. The Lady Rangers missed long 3-point attempts on their last two possessions in an attempt to send the game to overtime.
In the fourth quarter, Harding shot 7-of-11 from the field and made three 3-pointers. Northwestern shot only 3-of-17 and missed all eight 3-pointers in the quarter. The Lady Rangers did not have a field goal in the final six minutes of the game.
Sydney Layrock and Sydnie Jones combined for 25 first-half points, and Layrock's 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer gave the Lady Bisons a 37-34 lead at the break. It was Layrock's third 3-pointer of the half.
Eight of Northwestern Oklahoma's nine baskets in the first half came from 3-point range. The Rangers shot 8-of-17 from 3-point range and made all eight free-throw attempts. Northwestern was only 1-of-16 from inside the arc in the first half.
Layrock led Harding with 23 points and had eight rebounds. Jones was 8-of-8 from the floor and scored 18 points. Miller had 10, and Haney had seven points, eight rebounds and eight assists.
Ashley Pride led Northwestern with 17 points.
Harding's next game is Thursday in Searcy against Oklahoma Baptist. The Lady Bisons will tip off at 5:30 p.m. at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House.
