Harding Alone Atop GAC After Victory over East Central

SEARCY – Harding held East Central without a field goal for an eight-minute stretch of the fourth quarter and pulled away for a 74-67 victory Thursday in Great American Conference at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House.

With the victory, Harding remained unbeaten in four home games, moved to 8-2 overall and is alone in first place in the GAC with a 5-0 record. Henderson State entered the night tied with Harding for first but lost at home 85-80 to Southwestern Oklahoma. East Central fell to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the GAC. The Tigers, playing for the first time in 33 days, lost for the sixth time in their last seven games and lost their fifth straight road game.

Harding led 57-55 with 7:47 left in the game. Senior guard A'ndi Haney made a layup and was fouled. Haney missed the free throw, but an offensive rebound led to a three-point play by sophomore Sydnie Jones that put the Lady Bisons ahead 62-55.

Moyer hit a 3-pointer on Harding's next trip, and the Lady Bisons led by seven or more the rest of the way. East Central went from the 9:18 mark of the fourth quarter until 1:07 without a field goal.

Haney led Harding with a season-high 23 points, hitting 10-of-11 at the free-throw line. She added six rebounds and three steals. Junior Sydnie Layrock added 16 points, junior Falan Miller had 12 points and a team-high four assists. Jones had 10 points.

Junior Devon Branch led East Central with 21 points. The Tigers made 10 3-pointers, one off their season high, and shot a season-best 48 percent from long range.

Harding held a 35-23 rebound advantage, including a 12-3 lead on offensive rebounds.

The game was tied six times and there were 10 lead changes.

Harding returns to the Rhodes-Reaves Field House on Saturday to host Southeastern Oklahoma, who lost 69-51 at Arkansas Tech on Thursday.
