Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | by Scott Goode (10/20/17)

Ramos Nets Two Goals, Leads Harding Men's Soccer over Lindenwood

SEARCY – Harding men's soccer entered Thursday's game ranked No. 4 in the NCAA Central Region Rankings. The Bisons did not have a win against any of the top three in program history. After a very physical 90 minutes, that note changed as Harding defeated No. 3 Lindenwood 4-2 before a boisterous crowd at Stevens Soccer Field.

With the victory, Harding improved to 7-4-2 overall with four consecutive wins and seven in its last eight games. Lindenwood, a member of the NCAA Division II MIAA and located in St. Charles, Missouri, matched its season high for goals allowed and fell to 8-6-0 overall.

How it Happened
The turning point of the game came only 23 minutes in. A long pass from the midfield freed Harding's Jeremy Nwonumah up the right side. Nwonumah cut toward the goal and was upended by Lindenwood goalkeeper Tim Licht, who received a red card for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

Harding sophomore Christian Ramos converted the ensuing penalty kick against Lindenwood backup goalkeeper Aleksa Nenadic to give the Bisons a 1-0 lead.

Lindenwood tied the game less than 10 minutes later with the first of its two set-piece goals. Gaspar Alvarez scored his first goal of the season, heading in Jose de Gregorio's corner kick in the 32nd minute.

Harding received a second penalty kick in the 37th minute. A Lindenwood defender tripped up Harding's Matheus Ribeiro in the box, and Ramos drilled home the penalty kick in an almost identical shot as his first goal.

Again, Lindenwood knotted the game on a set piece. Alvarez scored on another header, this time off a Fernando Cordero free kick in the 41st minute.

The game remained tied for more than 35 minutes before Ribeiro scored what could be the goal of the season. Junior Julio Martins passed the ball all the way across the 18-yard box, and Ribeiro took one touch before drilling the ball into the top of the net for his first goal of the season and his second career game-winner.

???????Nwonumah added Harding's fourth goal in the 86th minute on a breakaway up the left side with Ramos providing a perfect pass for the assist.

Facts and Figures
The game "featured" 43 fouls, nine yellow cards and the red card to Licht. Lindenwood's 27 fouls were the most by a Harding opponent since Delta State committed 29 fouls on Oct. 21, 2011.

Ramos had two goals and an assist for the second time this season. The first was on Sept. 21 against Southern Nazarene. Ramos is now tied with Andre Cunha with six goals this season and leads the team with 15 points.

Harding has outscored its opponents 22-9 over the last eight games.

Harding scored two penalty kick goals in a game for the first time since scoring two in a 6-1 victory over Delta State on Sept. 30, 2004, and for only the third time in program history. The only other Harding player ever to score two penalty kick goals in the same game was Jeff Ireland, brother of Harding head coach Jon Ireland, against Ouachita Baptist on Oct. 9, 2001.

Ramos's eight shots in the game tied the most by a Bison this season.

Alvarez became the first Harding opponent to score multiple goals in a game this season.
