Harding Men's Soccer, Christian Brothers Score Late to Tie in Non-Conference Action

SEARCY – The last time the Harding men's soccer team tied Christian Brothers, current Bison head coach Jon Ireland was a player. He started the game as a midfielder in 2002, and the contest ended 1-1.

Christian Brothers had won all 18 meetings since then, but it appeared Thursday that Harding had ended the streak. Harding sophomore Braeden Grundy took a pass from junior Jeremy Nwonumah and slotted it past Christian Brothers goalkeeper Viktor Hoestbo with 1:18 left in the game for the apparent game-winner.

But only 31 seconds later, Christian Brothers scored its first goal in almost four full games when Andrew McKeever took a quick free kick from the just outside the Harding 18-yard box, and Patrick Power tapped in his first goal of the season to tie the game.

After two overtime periods with neither team scoring, the Bisons and Bucs tied the non-conference game 1-1.

Harding's record moved to 7-5-3, and Christian Brothers' record to 7-7-2.

Harding outshot Christian Brothers 16-9 overall and 11-4 in shots on goal. The Bucs' only shot on goal after halftime came on the goal, while Harding forced 10 saves from Hoestbo, including six in the second half.

Christian Brothers had lost three straight games by 1-0 scores entering the game but scored the game-tying goal Thursday with 47 seconds remaining.

Harding has one more non-conference game to play in the regular season. The Bisons travel to Jackson, Tennessee, Saturday to take on Union, who like Christian Brothers, plays in the Gulf South Conference.
