Southwestern Oklahoma Defeats Harding Men's Basketball Saturday in GAC Action

SEARCY – Southwestern Oklahoma's Jerry Hurt made a 3-pointer with just over two minutes left and a layup with 54 seconds left to help the Bulldogs pull out a 71-70 victory over the Harding men's basketball team Saturday in Great American Conference action at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House.

Harding (0-5, 0-4) tied the game at 66-66 on an Adam Horn layup with 2:41 left, the ninth tie of the game. Two possessions later Hurt hit the 3-pointer to put Southwestern (2-6, 1-3) ahead. Harding's Alex Francis cut the lead to one point with a layup, but Hurt extended the lead back to three with a layup of his own.

With 41 seconds left, Harding closed to within one point again on a bucket by Reggie Anthony. The Bisons forced a missed 3-pointer on Southwestern's next trip, but Harding also missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer on its final possession.

Both teams shot 37 percent from the field in the first half, and Harding had a 34-33 lead at the break. The game was tied six times in the second half, and both teams held six-point leads at different times in the half.

Wagner led Harding in scoring with 17 points, and Horn had his first double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Hurt led Southwestern with 22 points, and Charles Beauregard added 18.

Neither team shot well at the free-throw line. Southwestern was 13 of 24 (54 percent), and Harding was 22 of 38 (58 percent).

Harding's next action is a nonconference game Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. against LeMoyne-Owen in Memphis, Tennessee.
