Ward, Faulkner Combine for Shutout, Earn Doubleheader Split

SEARCY – Junior left-hander Jackson Ward and junior right-hander Mason Faulkner combined to pitch Harding baseball's first shutout of the season and earn the Bisons a split in Saturday's Great American Conference doubleheader with defending GAC champion Southwestern Oklahoma.

Harding won 3-0 in game two after Southwestern took the opener 7-1. Southwestern won Friday's series opener 6-1.

Harding is now 4-9 overall and has a 3-3 GAC record. Southwestern is 6-8 overall and 2-4 in conference games.

Ward (1-2) pitched 4 2/3 innings in the seven-inning game, allowing only two hits and three walks, for his first victory of the season. Following a one-out walk in the fifth, Faulkner relieved Ward and immediately picked off the runner at first base.

Southwestern's hits were a Joshua Santos leadoff double in the fourth, followed one out later by a Rogelio Sanchez single that sent Santos to third. A walk loaded the bases, but Ward stranded the runners.

Southwestern managed only one base runner off Faulkner, a two out walk to Rafael Otero with two outs in the sixth. Faulkner pitched the final 2 2/3 innings to earn his second save.

Harding took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Zach Beasley walked with one out and went to third on Chris Taylor's single. Beasley scored on Luke Van Dover's sacrifice fly to center.

Van Dover was in the mix again in the sixth, when Harding scored two more. Grant Guest hit his team-leading fifth double of the season to lead off the inning. One out later, Taylor singled to left to score Guest. After Taylor went to second on a balk, Van Dover notched his eighth RBI with a single up the middle that scored Taylor.

Southwestern starter Devin Ring (1-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Gunnar Cook (1-1), Southwestern's starter in the opener, pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts in the opener.

Southwestern did not have a hit in the first four innings against Harding starter Reed Roberts (0-2). The Bulldogs struck for two in the fifth and added four more in the seventh.

Harding's lone run came on a Guest RBI single to left in the fifth that scored Jesse Cox.

Roberts yielded five earned runs on only one hit in 6 1/3 innings.

Harding will play its next five games on the road, beginning with a non-conference game against Arkansas-Monticello on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
