Delta State Downs Harding Baseball in Extra Innings

SEARCY – Delta State scored two runs in the top of the 11th inning to complete a 9-7 comeback victory over Harding on Saturday at Jerry Moore Field in the season opener for both teams.

A doubleheader was scheduled for Saturday, but the length of the game and impending rain forced the teams to move the doubleheader to Sunday beginning at noon.

Harding trailed 4-2 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Bisons plated five runs in the frame on three hits. Myles Humphrys' two-run single was Harding's four run-scoring hit of the inning and gave Harding a 7-4 lead.

Delta State's comeback began with two in the seventh, and the Statesmen tied the game with a run in the ninth.

Harding had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with one out, but failed to score.

Delta State's Juwon Burney drove in the eventual game-winning run with a single to center with one out in the 11th.

Junior Grant Guest had two of Harding's six hits, including a double in the fourth. He also had one of Harding's RBI singles in the fifth. Freshman Myles Humphries singled, walked and drove in three runs.

Junior Reed Roberts started and was the first of five Harding pitchers. Roberts allowed three runs in three innings, but worked out of two bases-loaded jams. Freshman Logan McCall pitched three innings of relief and did not allow an earned run. Mason Faulkner (0-1) pitched the last three innings for Harding and took the loss.

Delta State reliever Zach Osbon (1-0) earned the win with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Statesman leadoff hitter Jason Popovich and Burney each had three hits. Delta State left 14 runners on.
