Early Homer, Strong Allen Start Leads Harding Baseball over Southern Nazarene

SEARCY – Harding freshman Luke Van Dover hit a two-run first-inning home run and freshman Austin Allen pitched seven solid innings to lead the Bisons to a 6-3 victory over Southern Nazarene on Saturday in Great American Conference baseball action at Jerry Moore Field.

Harding and Southern Nazarene will complete the three-game series Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.

Harding improved to 9-17 overall and 7-9 in the GAC. Southern Nazarene fell to 2-25 overall and 2-14 in conference.

Van Dover launched his team-leading third home run of the season on a 2-0 pitch with no outs and Grant Guest on first base in the bottom of the first inning. Guest led off the inning with a single off Southern Nazarene starter Austin Cooper (0-6).

Harding never trailed after that.

Allen (4-3) gave up nine hits and only one earned run. It was the sixth time in his eight starts this season that he allowed two earned runs or fewer. Southern Nazarene's only run against Allen came on three singles in the third. The Storm had no answer for Allen over the next four innings.

Harding added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Myles Humphreys singled in a run in the third, Guest's infield single scored Tyler Mohr in the fourth, and Humphreys drove in another with a single in the fifth.

In the eighth, Harding extended its lead to 6-1 on Connor Kelly's RBI single.

Southern Nazarene scored two in the top of the ninth, but closer Raiff Beever came on to get the last out and earn his third save.

Guest, Humphreys and Taylor had two hits each for Harding, who had 11 total hits and went 4-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
