Tech Sweeps Harding Baseball to Advance in GAC Tournament

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas Tech, the No. 2 seed in the Great American Conference Tournament, scored the last eight runs of game one and the first seven runs of game two in a doubleheader sweep of Harding, the No. 7 seed, on Saturday at Tech Field.

With the 8-4 and 10-6 victories, Arkansas Tech advanced to the GAC Tournament final four next weekend in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, joining Southern Arkansas, Arkansas-Monticello and Henderson State.

Harding's season came to an end with the Bisons posting a 23-28 record that included a 6-4 victory over Tech in Friday's first game in the best-of-three series.

Harding hit three home runs in the first four innings of game one to take a 4-0 lead. Ben Brauss, Chris Taylor and J. Paul Fullerton each hit home runs, the first time this season Harding had three homers in a game and the first time ever in a GAC Tournament game.

The Bisons did not score again in the opener, and Tech answered with eight straight runs, including a five-run sixth inning. Zach Klockowski hit his 13th home run for Tech.

Jackson Ward pitched well as Harding's starter, allowing only two earned runs in five innings. The loss went to reliever Raiff Beever (1-1). Tech reliever Isaac Hale (4-5) pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings for the win.

Tech hit two home runs in the first inning of game two, with Dylan McDearmon hitting a two-run shot and Klockowski hitting his 14th. The Wonder Boys added four more in the second to take a 7-0 lead.

Harding responded with a grand slam from Taylor, his second home run of the doubleheader. It pulled the Bisons within 7-4 and two more runs in the top of the sixth cut Tech's lead to one. Harding had the bases loaded with one out in the sixth, but Tech got out of the inning with one of its four double plays.

Harding could not complete the comeback. Tech (34-19) added two runs in the bottom of the sixth, and Kyle Gibbs hit a solo home run in the eighth.

Harding starter Logan McCall (2-4) took the loss. Tech starter Geoffrey Birkemeier (6-5) allowed five runs in five innings but was the winning pitcher.

Taylor, who was 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs, was one of three Bisons with two hits. Luke Van Dover was 2-for-2 with two runs, and Zach Beasley was 2-for-4 as well.

Reed Roberts pitched five innings of relief for the Bisons, yielding three earned runs on 10 hits. Harding's lone senior, Matt Brashear, closed out the game with 2 2/3 innings of work. He allowed two hits and one earned run.
