Northeastern State Defeats Harding Men's Soccer, 3-1

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State scored once in the first half and had two goals sandwiched around the lone tally for the Harding men's soccer team as the RiverHawks defeated the Bisons 3-1 Thursday in non-conference action at DeLoache Field.
 
The game was the last of four consecutive road games for Harding, who dropped to 0-3-2 on the season. Northeastern State, of the NCAA Division II MIAA, won its second straight game and improved to 2-3-0.
 
Joe Garcia scored Northeastern State's first goal on a free kick in the 25th minute. Neither team scored again for almost 50 minutes until Ismael Serratos made it 2-0 for the RiverHawks in the 74th minute.
 
Harding closed to within 2-1 in the 82nd minute. Junior Andre Cunha corralled a rebound off Braeden Grundy's shot and scored his second goal of the season.
 
Northeastern State responded with a goal on a Ben Watson breakaway in the 88th minute to cap the scoring.


Facts and Figures
 
Harding had three shots in the game's first 21 minutes but did not get another shot off until Jason Diaz's shot on goal in the 72nd minute.
 
Northeastern State outshot Harding 14-10, marking the first time this season the Bisons were outshot in a game.
 
Cunha's goal in the 82nd minute snapped a streak of 350 scoreless minutes for the Bisons. Cunha also scored in Harding's season opener against Oklahoma Christian.
 
Diaz and Grundy tied for Harding's lead in shots at three each.
 
Junior Michael Wasson made the start in goal for Harding and made three saves. He has two career starts against Northeastern State and has 10 saves in those two games.
 
 
Next Up
 
After four straight on the road, Harding finally returns home to host Southwest Baptist Saturday at 2 p.m. at Stevens Soccer Field. The Bisons were 7-1-0 at home in 2016.
