Harding Men's Soccer Ties 1-1 at Williams Baptist

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – Some aspects of Harding's 1-1 tie at Williams Baptist Tuesday in nonconference play felt very familiar to Bison head coach Jon Ireland. His best memory from Eagle Field in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, however was of a victory.

Seventeen years ago to the day, Harding played its first official men's soccer game, winning 5-2 over Williams Baptist in Walnut Ridge. That day, Ireland started for the Bisons, assisted on the first of three Luke Boren goals, and Harding posted all-time victory No. 1.

There was also a bit of déjà vu on Harding first goal Tuesday. In the Bisons' 3-2 season-opening loss to Oklahoma Baptist, junior Jason Diaz scored the game's first goal from the top of the box in the 42nd minute. Tuesday, Diaz scored the first goal from the top of the box in the 42nd minute. Sophomore Braeden Grundy had the assist.

Harding did not allow a shot in the second half until just under nine minutes remained, but Williams Baptist made the most of its first opportunity. Bison goalkeeper Michael Wasson saved Henrique Torres' shot from the left side of the box, but Danilo Cruz scored on the rebound.

Facts and Figures
  • Harding outshot Williams Baptist 13-4 in the first half and 25-10 overall. Both teams had three shots in the overtime periods, including a shot off the post from Williams Baptist.

  • Diaz's goal was the ninth of his career and marked the second time in his career to score in consecutive games.
  • Michael Wasson started in goal for the Bisons and had five saves.

  • Harding had 14 corner kicks, the most by a Harding team since the 2013 team had 16 against Southern Nazarene.
Quotes
  • "We had a lot of chances today, and just did not take advantage of them," Ireland said. "Right now, it feels like none of the breaks are going our way."

  • Harding's next home game is Saturday, Sept. 16, against Southwest Baptist.
