Harding Men's Basketball Falls 99-76 to Pitt State at GAC/MIAA Challenge

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Pittsburg State took advantage of Harding turnovers and defeated the Bisons 99-76 Saturday at the GAC/MIAA Challenge, hosted by the University of Central Missouri.

Harding fell to 0-2 with the loss and plays an exhibition game Tuesday against NCAA Division I opponent Louisiana Tech in Ruston, Louisiana. Pitt State, of the MIAA, evened its record at 1-1.

Pitt State scored 29 points off 22 Harding turnovers. The Bisons scored six points off eight Gorilla turnovers.

Croatian freshman Gabriel Divic led Harding with 15 points, hitting 5-of-10 from the field. Collin Hale added 12, Gojko Djokovic had 11, and Adam Horn scored 10.

Grant Lozoya of Pitt State led all scorers with 28 points, connecting on 10-of-14 shots and hitting all six free throws. Donovan Franklin made 10 free throws in the first half and finished with 23 points and nine rebounds.

Harding trailed 47-36 at halftime. The Bisons missed their first seven shots of the game but rallied to shoot 37.5 percent (9 of 24) in the half. Harding made 16 of 26 free-throw attempts before the break and 26-of-41 in the game.

Pittsburg State also shot 37.5 percent (12 of 32) and connected on 18-of-21 free throws in the first half. Franklin was a perfect 10-of-10 from the line in the half. The Gorillas made 32 of 38 free throws in the game.

Pittsburg State led 41-26 with 4:12 left in the half, but Harding went on a 10-0 run to close the gap to 41-36 on Adam Horn's layup with 1:40 left. Pitt State scored the final six points to take an 11-point halftime lead.

Pitt State opened a 22-point lead with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game. An 8-0 Harding run that included two Divic 3-pointers and a Horn layup cut the Gorilla lead to 67-53 with 11:41 left. Harding got no closer the rest of the way.

  • The last time the teams played before Saturday was in 1993. Pitt State won the game 62-53 at the MSCC Pro-Am Athletics/Oak Hill Hospital Classic in Joplin, Missouri. Tony Marion led the Bisons with 20 points and 12 rebounds in the game, and Fabian Mina had 10 points and 14 rebounds.
  • Harding again shot better in the second half. In its 85-62 loss to Central Missouri on Friday, Harding shot 12 percent in the first half and 59 percent in the second half. Saturday against Pitt State, Harding shot 38 percent in the first half and 52 in the second half.
  • Harding shot 41 free throws against Pitt State. The last time Harding shot 41 or more free throws in a game was in 2012 when the Bisons shot 41 against Shepherd Tech.
