No. 25 Harding Football Posts 28-0 Shutout on Senior Day; Playoff Announcement Sunday

SEARCY – Harding's offense scored a touchdown in each quarter and the defense pitched its second shutout of the season as the Bisons defeated Arkansas Tech 28-0 in Great American Conference action on Senior Day at First Security Stadium.

The win was Harding's fifth straight and gave the Bisons a 9-2 overall and GAC record. The Bisons finished second in the GAC regular season standings. Arkansas Tech lost for the sixth time in its last seven games and finished 3-8.

Harding entered the game ranked 25th in Division II and eighth in NCAA Super Region 3. The top seven teams reach the playoffs. Southern Arkansas, seventh in the last regional rankings, lost 20-17 loss at Arkansas-Monticello, opening the door for Harding to earn its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Playoffs. The announcement of the 28-team playoff field will come Sunday at 4 p.m. on NCAA.com.

Each Harding scoring drive Saturday was of 60 yards or more and two of them lasted longer than eight minutes.

Tristan Tucker scored on a 4-yard run with 2:34 left in the first quarter to finish a 13-play, 79-yard drive that took 8:13 off the clock.

After a Tech punt, Harding took over at the Wonder Boy 40 and drove 60 yards on eight plays with reserve fullback Jesse Honnas scoring from a yard out on a fullback dive. The Bisons led 14-0 with 11:49 left in the half.

Tech's only drive longer than 30 yards came in the second quarter but fizzled at the Harding 26 when quarterback Manny Harris threw an incomplete pass on 4th-and-18.

Harding received the opening kickoff of the second half. Seventy-two yards and 14 plays later and with 8:53 off the clock, sophomore fullback Cole Chancey scored his 13th touchdown of the season on a 1-yard plunge giving Harding a 21-0 lead.

Harding completed its scoring by taking its first drive of the fourth quarter 75 yards. Eight straight rushes resulted in a 6-yard touchdown by quarterback Preston Paden with 7:40 left.

Offensively, Harding rushed for 360 yards, passed for 56, had no turnovers and held the ball for 40 minutes 11 seconds. Defensively, Harding held Tech to only 80 rushing yards and 76 passing yards. The Wonder Boys had only 45 offensive snaps.

FACTS AND FIGURES
  • Cole Chancey led Harding's rushing attack with a season-high 126 yards on 24 carries. His rushing TD was the 28th of his career, tying Romo Westbrook (28, 2011-14) for third all-time at Harding.
  • Preston Paden rushed for 56 yards on 11 carries and was 2-of-2 passing for 56 yards.
  • Bryan Allen rushed for 71 yards for Arkansas Tech and became the school's all-time leading rusher.
  • Sam Blankenship led Harding's defense with eight tackles, including 2.0 tackles for loss.
  • Harding's defense had 6.0 tackles for loss, including sacks from T.J. Winslow and Michael Gant.
  • Harding had a pregame ceremony honoring 21 seniors playing their final regular season game at First Security Stadium.
