Christian Brothers Holds Off Harding Men's Basketball in New Year's Eve Matchup

SEARCY – Harding pulled to within five points of Christian Brothers seven times in the second half Monday but fell 69-57 in nonconference, New Year's Eve action at Rhodes-Reaves Field House. It was just the third time Harding played on New Year's Eve and the first time ever in Searcy.

Christian Brothers (8-4) led by 11 at halftime, but Harding scored the first six points of the second half to cut the CBU lead to 33-28.

Harding's last foray to within five came with just over a minute left. JV Long scored on a driving layup, but Christian Brothers guard Joe Laravie hit a 3-pointer from the corner, CBU's sixth straight made shot, to put the game away. The Bucs, winners of three straight, outscored the Bisons 7-0 in the final 45 seconds.

Harding suffered its first home loss in five games this season and fell to 5-5 overall. The Bisons return to Great American Conference play Thursday against East Central in Ada, Oklahoma.

Harding shot only 27 percent in the first half and missed 11 straight shots during a 12-2 Christian Brothers run. The Bucs shot only 1-of-10 from 3-point range during the first half.

Christian Brothers shot 50 percent (15 of 30) in the first half with 28 of their 33 points coming in the paint. Jacob Lyons made 5-of-6 and led all scorers with 10 points before the break.

Harding missed its first 11 3-point attempts, but Long drained one at the buzzer to cut Christian Brothers's lead to 33-22 at halftime.

Long led Harding in scoring with 16 points. He was 6-of-13 from the field and made two of Harding's three 3-pointers. Romen Martin and J.P. Brandon scored 11 each, and Martin had a team-high nine rebounds.

Adam Dieball recorded a triple-double for Christian Brothers, leading the team with 16 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists. Lyons finished with 16 points, and Laravie had 13.

Christian Brothers made 20 3-pointers against Harding in the first meeting between the teams, a 90-74 CBU victory in Memphis on Nov. 26. Harding held Christian Brothers to only four 3s Monday, but the Bucs made 24 layups and outscored the Bisons 48-38 in the lane.
