Late Layup Sends Henderson State Past Harding

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State reserve guard Jeremiah Toney made a layup on the left side with 3.4 seconds remaining to lift the Reddies to a 75-74 victory over Harding Saturday in Great American Conference men's basketball action.

After a cold start to the second half, Harding went on a stretch where it hit 7 of 8 field goals and took a 72-71 lead on Jordan West's 3-pointer with 3:02 left. Both teams made two free throws and no baskets down the stretch until Toney's layup. Harding missed four free throws in the final two minutes, including two with 16 seconds remaining.

Harding dropped to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the GAC. The Bisons are one of seven teams in the conference with one loss. Henderson State improved to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the GAC.

Harding used a 15-1 run to pull out to a 23-13 lead on a pair of Colin Hale free throws with 11:07 left in the first half. The Bisons made only one of their next 12 shots, and the Reddies retook the lead with a minute remaining. Henderson State closed the half on a 10-0 run and led 35-31 at the break.

Hale led Harding with 20 points and made three of the Bisons' seven 3-pointers. Reggie Anthony scored 13 points, and JV Long had 12.

Chris Parker led Henderson State with 19 points.

Harding shot 11 of 32 from the field in both halves to finish 22 of 64 (34 percent). Henderson State shot 40 percent, including 16 of 32 (50 percent) in the second half. Both teams missed 15 free throws.

Harding is back in action next Saturday in Arkadelphia against Ouachita Baptist.
