Harding Women's Basketball Defense Keys Victory over Southern Nazarene

SEARCY – Harding had one of its best defensive halves of the season and defeated Southern Nazarene 62-44 Saturday in Great American Conference action at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House. It was the fourth time this season Harding held an opponent to fewer than 50 points.

The victory was the sixth in Harding's last seven home games and boosted the Lady Bisons' record to 12-13 overall and 8-9 in the GAC. Harding is now in a three-way tie for fourth in the conference standings with five games remaining.

Southern Nazarene lost its eighth straight game and fell to Harding for the sixth straight time in Searcy. The Crimson Storm dropped to 7-14 overall and 5-12 in conference and is in danger of missing the GAC Tournament.

Harding led 30-28 at halftime but held Southern Nazarene scoreless for a stretch of more than five minutes in the third quarter to pull away and lead 47-35 after three. The Lady Bisons outscored the Crimson Storm 17-7 in the period. Southern Nazarene missed 10 consecutive shots in the period and finished 3 of 13 from the field. The Crimson Storm made only 1 of 6 free throws as well.

Southern Nazarene's offensive struggles continued in the fourth quarter. The Crimson Storm scored only nine points and had just 16 total in the second half. The team shot 6 of 24 (25 percent) after halftime and made only 6 of 18 (33 percent) from the free-throw line in the game.

Harding shot 44 percent (19 of 43) for the game. Peyton Padgett made a 3-pointer on Harding's first possession, and it was the Lady Bisons' only 3-pointer of the game. The last time Harding made one or fewer 3-pointers in a game and still won was in a 66-58 victory over Ouachita Baptist in 2013 in a game the Lady Bisons went 0 of 9 from long range.

Sydney Layrock scored 18 points to lead the Lady Bisons and moved past Stacey Owens into six place on Harding's career scoring list with 1,469 points. Layrock also had 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.

Kellie Lampo added 15 points, and Padgett had 12 points and five assists.

Adrienne Berry was the only Crimson Storm player in double figures with 19 points. She was 7 of 20 from the field and made three of her teams four 3-pointers.

Harding outscored Southern Nazarene 23-6 at the free-throw line.

Harding will look to even its season and conference record Thursday on the road at Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
