Six-Run Sixth Leads Harding Softball to Victory; Game Two Suspended with Harding Winning

SEARCY – Harding used a six-run sixth inning to blow open a close game and defeat Southwestern Oklahoma 9-2 Sunday in the first of four games against the Lady Bulldogs in Great American Conference play at the HU Softball Field. Game two of the doubleheader was suspended due to darkness in the top of the fifth inning with Harding leading 11-3 and will resume Monday at 10 a.m. The regularly scheduled doubleheader will follow.

The win in its home opener was the fifth straight for Harding, who improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the GAC. Southwestern remained winless at 0-7 overall and 0-1 in conference.

Leading 3-2 entering the bottom of the sixth, Harding sent 10 hitters to the plate in the inning. The key hits were a two-run double by Katie Carney and a two-run home run by Madison Leggett that hit the netting on the front of the scoreboard in left-center field. It was Leggett's team-leading fourth home run of the season. Katlyn Gordon also had an RBI single in the inning.

Harding had eight hits, walked nine times and stole six bases. Gordon, Peyton Mills and Briley Feringa each had two hits.

Amanda Berry (3-0) kept the Southwestern hitters off balance and pitched her third complete game. She allowed six hits and two earned run with no walks and six strikeouts.

Southwestern's Riley Ricken (0-2) took the loss. She also pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and eight earned runs.

Samantha Householder and Kinsey Skroh had two hits apiece for the Lady Bulldogs.

It was another six-run inning, this time the first, that got Harding off to a good start in game two. Trailing 2-0 after the top of the inning, Harding again sent 10 hitters to the plate. The inning included RBI singles from Leggett and Madi Trump and a steal of home by Amanda Fields.

Leggett has three hits in game two, and Trump has two.

Harding just needs to hold Southwestern scoreless in the top of the fifth when the game resumes to earn the victory due to the NCAA's 8-run rule.
