Guest Doubles, Homers in Harding Baseball's 9-5 Loss at Southwestern Oklahoma

SEARCY – Harding senior Grant Guest hit his second home run of the season and added a double in the Bisons' 9-5 loss Monday to Southwestern Oklahoma in Great American Conference plat at the SWOSU Athletic Complex.

Southwestern's win clinched a three-game series sweep, and the Bulldogs improved to 8-5 overall and 5-1 in conference. Harding fell to 5-9 overall and 1-5 in the GAC.

Harding took an early 2-0 lead in the first. Guest doubled with one out, and Chris Taylor followed that with a single. Both runners scored on Nolan Fertig's two-out double to left.

Southwestern took the lead for good with a five-run third inning. The key hit was a two-run home run to left center from Bryan Miranda.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 8-2 with three runs in the fifth, two scoring on Connor Duer's single to left.

Harding cut the lead to 8-4 on Guest's two-run home run in the seventh.

Southwestern added a run in the bottom of the eighth, and Harding scored one on Taylor's RBI double in the ninth.

Harding starter Reed Roberts (1-1) took the loss. He allowed eight earned runs in 4 2/3 innings with four walks and six strikeouts. Jackson Ward pitched the last 3 1/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts.

Two Bulldog pitchers combined to strikeout 13 with no walks. Cooper Cantwell (2-0) allowed 11 hits and four runs (three earned) over 6 2/3 innings for the win. Gabe Jacobo gave up one run in the last 2 1/3 innings and struck out four.

Harding outhit Southwestern 13-11, but lost for the first time in six games when it outhit its opponent.

Guest finished 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Fertig was 3-for-5 with two RBI.

Miles Humphreys did not have a hit in four at-bats, ending his eight-game hitting streak, but he was hit by a pitch to extend his team-best on-base streak to 10 games.

Harding was scheduled to play Delta State tomorrow in Cleveland, Mississippi, but neither teams' field is in playable condition due to heavy rain. The game has been postponed to Tuesday, Mar. 13 at 6 p.m. in Cleveland.
