Harding Baseball and St. Edward's Split Tight Games in Doubleheader

SEARCY – Harding and St. Edward's split a pair of low-scoring games Friday at Jerry Moore Field with St. Edward's taking the opener 4-1 and Harding winning game two 3-1.

The teams are scheduled to finish the three-game series with a single, nine-inning game Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

St. Edward's starter Juan Cortina allowed only four hits and struck out nine without a walk over seven innings to lead the Hilltoppers in game one.

TJ Giselbach had a sacrifice fly in the first and a solo home run in the third to give St. Edward's a 2-0 lead. The Hilltoppers tacked on two more in the sixth on two hits and a Harding error.

Harding's lone run in the opener came on a Grant Guest RBI ground out in the eighth that scored pinch runner Brooks Pitaniello from third.

Harding starter Austin Allen (1-1) took the loss but pitched well. He allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Harding trailed 1-0 in game two until the bottom of the fifth when two two-out hits put the Bisons ahead to stay.

With two outs and Myles Humphreys at third base, Will Francis lined a single to right center to tie the game. Connor Kelly then laced a double to right center sending Francis all the way around. Francis slid in head first, just under the tag, to give Harding a 2-1 lead.

Guest's leadoff home run in the sixth sealed the win for Harding.

Left-hander Tanner Smith (1-1) earned the win on the mound for the Bisons. He allowed four hits and one earned run in 5 1/3 innings. Mason Faulkner got two outs in the sixth, and Reed Roberts pitched a scoreless seventh to collect the save.

Tanner Lawson (1-1) pitched a complete game for St. Edward's and took the loss.

Harding is now 2-3 on the season after the split, and St. Edward's is 3-2.
