Top-Ranked Delta State Defeats Harding Baseball

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State, the No. 1-ranked team in NCAA Division II, hit three home runs, including two from 2017 national player of the year Zack Shannon, and defeated Harding 15-0 Tuesday in a nonconference game at Ferriss Field. The game ended after seven innings due to the NCAA's 10-run rule.

Shannon hit a three-run home run in the first and added another three-run homer in Delta State's eight-run third inning. He went 3-for-3 with two runs and seven RBIs before leaving the game after the fourth inning.

Delta State's third home run was a Jason Popovich grand slam in the fourth that concluded the scoring. Popovich drove in six.

Harding's lone hit in the game came with one out in the top of the first. Connor Kelly reached on an infield single to third and now has hits in nine of his last 10 games. The Bisons' only other base runner was Brooks Pitaniello, who walked with two outs in the sixth.

Chris Taylor (0-1) was Harding's starting pitcher for the first time in his career. He took the loss, allowing six runs in two innings.

Melvin Frazier (3-0) was the winning pitcher for Delta State, pitching four scoreless innings.

With the victory, Delta State improved to 17-2. Harding fell to 7-15 and returns to Great American Conference play this weekend at home against Oklahoma Baptist.
