Harding Men's Tennis Sweeps Doubles, Upsets No. 16 Northwest Missouri

SEARCY – Harding men's tennis used a doubles sweep, a straight-sets singles win and a three-set singles win to defeat 16th-ranked Northwest Missouri State 5-4 Saturday at the Harding Tennis Courts. The victory marks the fifth straight season that Harding has defeated a nationally ranked team, but Northwest Missouri was the highest-ranked team Harding has defeated.
 
The doubles sweep was Harding's fourth in its last four matches. Alejandro Sendra and Morgan Salvan won their fifth straight match 8-6 to score Harding's first point. Adria Abella and Pablo Trevino won a tiebreaker 9-8 at No. 3 to earn the second point, and Carlos Crisostomo and Luis Tirado, ranked 21st nationally, won 8-6 at No. 2 to finish the sweep. Crisostomo and Tirado have also won five straight and are 16-7 overall.
 
With three points in doubles, Harding needed two singles wins to clinch the match. One came quickly, and the other, well, it took a while.
 
After Northwest picked up its first point with a win at No. 6, Salvan, a freshman, won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 for Harding's fourth point. It was his 18th singles win of the season, three short of Harding's NCAA-era record of 21 wins by Darren Wade in 1997-98.
 
Northwest rallied with a straight-sets win at No. 5 and two three-set victories at No. 1 and No. 3, tying the match at 4-4.
 
The only match still going was on Court 2, where Harding sophomore Alejandro Sendra had split the first two sets with Rahul Manoah, the 17th-ranked singles player in the Central Region. The third set was not close, and Sendra clinched the match with a 6-2 set win. It was the first time in 25 career singles matches that Sendra went to a third set.
 
The victory was Harding's fifth straight and pushed the team's record to 8-5. The Bisons play again Thursday, Mar. 22, taking on Christian Brothers and Rhodes in Memphis, Tennessee.
