Harding Baseball Wins Wild (Pitch) Game over Hendrix

SEARCY – Hendrix, an NCAA Division III school, used nine pitchers in its midweek game against Harding Tuesday at Jerry Moore Field. Hendrix's pitchers walked 10 and threw nine wild pitches in a 10-9 Harding victory that went 10 innings and saw 383 pitches thrown.

The wildness caught up to the Hendrix pitchers in the bottom of the 10th. Harding's Luke Van Dover walked to lead off the inning against Hendrix pitcher Nick Pottle. Van Dover went to second on a wild pitch that Hendrix catcher Joshua Rollins had trouble finding as the ball bounded away, and Van Dover continued on to third.

One pitch later, Harding's Nolan Fertig lined a single over a drawn-in infield and into right center to give the Bisons their second one-run win over Hendrix this season. The Bisons won 9-8 over the Warriors on March 6 in Conway, Arkansas.

Harding (10-16) was two outs away from winning the game in the ninth, but Rollins hit his first home run of the season to left to tie the game 9-9.

The Bisons came from 8-6 down with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. After Fertig drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Connor Kelly drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a bloop single to right.

Hendrix (7-13) had taken the two-run lead with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth.

Harding had five players with multiple hits, including Chris Taylor, who was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Fertig, Kelly, Grant Guest and Zach Beasley had two hits each.

Tanner Cooper led Hendrix, going 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.

Harding's fifth pitcher, Mason Faulkner (1-2), pitched the final two innings and earned the win. He struck out three.

Pottle (0-1) took the loss, allowing the winning run.

Harding returns to Jerry Moore Field Wednesday at 4 p.m. to play Christian Brothers.
