Baseball Bisons Drop Tight 2-1 Game to Southeastern in Series Opener

SEARCY – Southeastern Oklahoma scored two runs in the sixth inning to erase a one-run deficit and defeated Harding 2-1 Friday in the first of three Great American Conference games at Jerry Moore Field.

Both teams now have 15-17 overall records. Harding is 7-12 in conference, and Southeastern is 10-9.

Two of Harding's four hits came in the fourth inning. Luke Van Dover led off the inning with a single. He stole second with two outs and scored on Connor Kelly's RBI single to left, Kelly's 26th RBI of the season.

Harding starter Austin Allen (2-5) did a good job stranding runners in arguably his best start of the season. Southeastern left 11 runners on and hit only 3-for-18 (.188) with runners in scoring position. Allen pitched six innings and struck out six with no walks and allowed only one earned run. Mason Faulkner was also outstanding for Harding out of the pen. Faulkner gave up two hits and struck out five in three scoreless innings of relief. Faulkner has not allowed a run in his last 7 1/3 innings over three appearances.

Austin Ferguson and Brett Akins hit back-to-back doubles to open the sixth. Akins' two-bagger scored Ferguson, and Akins later scored an unearned run on a passed ball.

Cody Nitson (2-3) pitched a complete game to earn the win for Southeastern. He struck out eight and walked only one.

The two teams conclude the series Saturday at 2 p.m. Fans are invited to attend a ceremony dedicating Harding's new lights at Jerry Moore Field. The Tom Hull Teammate Award will also be announced at the ceremony.
