McCall Pitches Well, Delta State Defeats Harding 8-3

SEARCY – Harding starter Logan McCall had arguably the best outing of his career, but fifth-ranked Delta State got to the Bison bullpen and defeated Harding 8-3 Tuesday at Jerry Moore Field.

Harding (20-19) returns to Great American Conference play this weekend with a series against Southern Arkansas scheduled to begin Friday. Delta State (29-6) won its ninth straight.

After Delta State used three hits to score a run in the top of the first, McCall shut down the powerful Statesmen offense over the next four innings. He pitched a career-high five innings and gave up only one run on five hits with three strikeouts.

While McCall was posting zeros on the scoreboard, Harding notched three runs, two in the third and one more in the fifth. Zach Beasley and Connor Kelly drove in the third-inning runs, and Luke Van Dover's double drove in Brendan Perrett in the fifth.

Delta State's big inning came in the sixth. The Statesmen scored six in the inning, three each off Harding relievers Nash Thomas (1-1) and Connor McVay. Two runs came off the 23rd home run of the season by USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award candidate Zach Shannon.

Harding reliever Matt Sherry also performed well. He pitched the final 3 1/3 innings and allowed only one unearned run on three hits.

Harding had 10 hits in the game, including two each from Grant Guest, Van Dover and Kelly. Guest and Van Dover both had their 12th doubles of the season.
