Harding Tennis Sweeps Doubles, Defeats Oklahoma Baptist to Reach GAC Championship

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Harding sophomore Alejandro Sendra won in three sets Friday to clinch a berth for the Bisons in the championship match of the Great American Conference Tournament.

With Sendra's win, No. 2 seed Harding claimed a 5-3 victory over No. 3 seed Oklahoma Baptist and earned a shot at No. 1 seed Southeastern Oklahoma Saturday in the finals. Southeastern defeated Ouachita Baptist 5-0 Friday.

Harding improved to 14-6 with the victory and has won 11 of its last 12 matches.

The key to Harding's victory came early. The Bisons won all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. The No. 2 team of Carlos Crisostomo and Luis Tirado won their 11th consecutive match and improved to 22-7, tying them with Vernon Lewis and Nigel Liverpool of the 1985 Harding team for the second most doubles victories in a season.

Harding needed two additional singles win to take the match. The first came at No. 5, where Adria Abella won his fifth straight match 6-0, 6-1 for the Bisons' fourth point. Oklahoma Baptist closed to 4-3 with wins at No. 1, No. 4, and No. 6, but Sendra's victory pushed Harding into the championship.
