Harding Baseball Concludes 2018 with Sweep of Tech

SEARCY – The 2018 Harding baseball team concluded its season Saturday disappointed that it fell one game short of qualifying for the Great American Conference Tournament, but it will never forget how its season ended.

After defeating Arkansas Tech 10-4 on Friday, the Bisons came back and swept the Wonder Boys 11-0 and 6-4 Saturday, their seventh straight GAC series win and the first three-game sweep of Arkansas Tech in Harding's NCAA era (since 1997).

Several of Harding's nine seniors had an outstanding day, but Arkansas Tech literally could not get senior Zach Beasley out. Beasley went 6-for-6 with four runs, four RBIs and three doubles. His batting average went from .316 to .342 on the final day of the season.

In the opener, Harding's first five hitters combined to go 12-for-17 (.706) with 10 runs and five RBIs. Luke Van Dover was 3-for-3 with two doubles and four runs scored. The Bisons scored four in both the third and sixth innings. The game ended after seven innings due to the NCAA's 10-run rule.

Tanner Smith (6-5) pitched his first shutout as a Bison, allowing only four hits and one walk with two strikeouts. It was the sixth time in 13 starts this season that he allowed five hits or fewer. He needed only 82 pitches and threw 52 of them for strikes.

Jake Harvey was the only Wonder Boy with two hits.

Tech starter Layton Robinson (2-2) lasted only three innings and surrendered seven hits and six runs (five earned).

With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth in game two, Van Dover singled in a run and Beasley hit his third double of the doubleheader to put the Bisons ahead for good.

Three Harding seniors combined to get the win on the mound. Jackson Ward (7-2) pitched five innings and left with the lead. Mason Faulkner pitched a perfect sixth, and Reed Roberts earned his fourth save by working around a walk in the seventh to retire the Wonder Boys.

Beasley, 3-for-3 with a double, was the only Bison with multiple hits. Seniors Will Francis and Hayden Walraven both drove in two runs.

Tech starter Hayes Cox (8-3) gave up six runs in five innings and got the loss. Shane Pollard led the Wonder Boys with two hits.

Harding concluded its season with a 29-21 record and 18-15 GAC mark. The Bisons won 22 of their final 28 games. The team's 29 wins were the most since 2013. The last time Harding finished eight or more games over .500 was the 2011 NCAA regional season when the Bisons finished 42-14.
