Harding Men's Soccer Suffers First Loss in Overtime at Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Harding men's soccer scored twice in the first half, but Lindenwood equalized late and scored early in overtime to give the Bisons their first loss of the season, 3-2 in nonconference play Sunday.

Harding fell to 4-1-1 with the loss, while Lindenwood of the MIAA improved to 3-2-1.

A shot from nearly 30 yards out from Harding's Julio Martins gave the Bisons the lead in the 11th minute. It was his second goal of the season and came on Jack Savage's team-leading third assist.

Lindenwood tied the game in the 32nd minute, but Braeden Grundy put Harding back on top, again on an assist from Savage, in the 44th minute.

Lindenwood knotted the game in the 75th minute on a goal by Johannes Brendle, and Gaspar Alvarez won it on a header 73 seconds into overtime.

Harding opens Great American Conference play this week. The Bisons take on Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday in Shawnee, Oklahoma, and play Southern Nazarene on Saturday in Bethany, Oklahoma.

FACTS AND FIGURES
  • Martins goal was his third in 23 games for the Bisons. Grundy's goal was the ninth of his Harding career.
  • With Savage's two-assist effort Sunday, Harding has now had a player with two or more assists in a game 31 times. The last player with two assists in a game was Barry Foster at Christian Brothers in 2016.
  • Lindenwood managed 31 shots against Harding, the most against the Bisons since Northeastern State had 31 in 2015. Only nine of Lindenwood's shots were on goal.
  • Harding has scored at least one goal in all six of its games to open the season, the first time the Bisons have achieved that feat in the program's 19-year history.
  • Harding scored two goals on only three shots on goal. The last time Harding scored multiple goals with three or fewer shots on goal came against Oklahoma Baptist in 2016 when it scored on both of its shots on goal.
  • With 91 minutes played against Lindenwood, Harding goalkeeper Michael Wasson became Harding's career leader in minutes played as a goalkeeper at 4,019, surpassing the record of 3,942 by Michael Allen from 2000-03. Wasson is already Harding's career record holder in goalkeeper wins (21) and shutouts (14).
