Great Start, Great Finish: Baseball Bisons Sweep UAM

SEARCY – Harding used a great start and a great finish to win both games of a Great American Conference doubleheader Sunday over Arkansas-Monticello at Jerry Moore Field.

The Bisons won the opener 7-1 and came from four runs down in the bottom of the seventh to win game two 6-5 in extra innings. Harding won Saturday's series opener 5-3. Now with a seven-game winning streak, the Bisons moved to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in conference. Arkansas-Monticello has lost four straight and fell to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the GAC.

Harding returns to Jerry Moore Field Monday for a nonconference doubleheader against NAIA foe Williams Baptist. The Bisons play against Southern Arkansas in Magnolia next weekend in conference action.

Game 1
Three two-out, run-scoring doubles keyed Harding's victory in game one. Miles Humphreys doubled in two with two outs in the first. Ben Brauss had a two-out, two-run double as part of Harding's three-run third, and Ben Bailey pushed the Harding lead to 6-0 in the fourth with another RBI double.

Bailey had his first career three-hit game, and Brauss drove in three runs. Connor Kelly was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

On the mound, reigning GAC Pitcher of the Week Tanner Smith (2-1) turned in another stellar effort for Harding. He pitched his first career nine-inning complete game and did not give up a run until two outs in the top of the ninth. Smith gave up four hits and struck out six.

UAM starter Jarod Seals (0-2) took the loss, allowing five earned runs in 3.0 innings. Jordan Johnson had two of the Weevils' four hits.

Game 2
Harding trailed 5-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning in the seven-inning game. After a UAM error with two outs extended the inning, Kelly drove in two runs with a single to center, and Nolan Fertig doubled in two more to tie the game at five.

In the eighth inning, Bailey led off with a single to center, and Cody Smith replaced him as a pinch runner. Humphreys laid down a bunt and moved Smith to second. Two batters later, David Butterfield set off a celebration with the game-winning single to center to score Smith. For Butterfield, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, it was his first RBI of the season.

Senior Brian Tims (1-0) earned the win with 3.0 innings of relief. He allowed one unearned run and struck out three. Logan McCall started and last 5.0 innings, allowing four earned runs.

All four runs Harding scored in the seventh were unearned against UAM starter Matt Lundh. He struck out 10 in 6.2 innings. Reliever Jake Keily (0-1) took the loss. He pitched the eighth.

Johnson had another multi-hit game for the Weevils. He was 3-for-4 with a run and a double.
