Harding Offense Sizzles, Fizzles in Doubleheader Split with East Central

SEARCY – Harding had a season-high 16 hits in a 9-1 win in the first game of a Great American Conference doubleheader Friday against East Central but had only five hits and a season-high three errors in losing game two 3-1.

The teams conclude the series Saturday with a single game at noon.

Harding moved to 12-7 overall with the split and 5-3 in conference games. East Central is now 3-15 overall and 3-5 in the GAC.

Game 1
Harding scoring in six of its eight at-bats and had five players with multiple hits in the opener. Miles Humphreys had Harding's first four-hit game of the season and the second of his career, going 4-for-5 with a run scored.

Nolan Fertig was 3-for-5 with a run and three RBIs, and David Butterfield tied a career high with three hits and scored a career-high three runs.

Harding took a 3-0 lead in the second with Fertig providing the key hit with a two-run single to center. Fertig added another RBI on a ground ball in the fourth.

The Bisons made it 5-0 with a run in the fifth and tacked on two more with RBI bunts from Jack Thomas and Brendan Perrett. Harding scored twice more in the eighth.

Junior Austin Allen (3-2) had one of the best outings of his career on the mound for Harding. He pitched 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing only five singles and no walks with five strikeouts. Junior Zach Bilek pitched the final two innings, giving up a run on two hits with four strikeouts.

East Central starter Grant Harmon (0-1) took the loss. He yielded five earned runs in 6.0 innings.

Game 2
A two-run, first-inning home run in game two provided all the offense East Central needed. Josh Lincoln reached on an error, and three batters later, Dakota Washington hit his third home run of the season.

Harding starter Tanner Smith (3-2) settled in and did not allow another run until the seventh. The run came in on a wild pitch after an error with two outs should have ended the inning.

Smith pitched all seven innings, allowing eight hits and one walk and striking out four.

Harding's bats never got going against East Central starter Alec Lemmon (1-2). The Bisons's only run came in the sixth. Ben Bailey singled to lead off the inning, and pinch runner Cody Smith replaced him on the bases. Smith advanced to second on a ground out and to third on a throwing error. He scored on Fertig's ground out.

Humphreys was 2-for-3 in the game and 6-for-8 in the doubleheader. He is second on the team with a .356 average and has a team-best .444 on-base percentage.
