Harding Offense Erupts to Split Doubleheader at Oklahoma Baptist

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Both teams earned come-from-behind victories Saturday as Harding and Oklahoma Baptist split a doubleheader to conclude their three-game Great American Conference series at Bison Field.

In the opener, Harding led 4-0 but fell 6-4, and in the second game, Oklahoma Baptist led 3-2 before a seven-run fourth inning led to a 13-3 Harding win. It was Harding's first win in six games against Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee.

Harding is now 15-11 overall and 8-7 in conference, good for sixth. Oklahoma Baptist is 14-10 overall and fourth at 10-5 in the GAC.

Game 1
Harding led 4-0 entering the fifth inning, but P.J. Harris's two-run double and Jake Gozzo's two-run home run tied the game.

Oklahoma Baptist took advantage of a Harding error to score two unearned runs in the eighth to take the lead for good.

Harding opened the scoring in the first. Nolan Fertig singled to lead off the game and scored on Connor Kelley's double. Luke Van Dover also scored on David Butterfield's sacrifice fly.

The Bisons took a four-run lead with two in the fourth. Ben Brauss and Tyler Mohr had RBI singles.

Logan McCall started for the Bisons and went 6.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. He walked five and struck out four. McCall has not allowed more than four earned runs in any of his seven starts this season.

Ryder Yakel (2-2) relieved McCall in the seventh. He took the loss despite running his streak of innings pitched without giving up an earned run to 25.0. The two runs scored against him were unearned due to a Harding error.

Oklahoma Baptist reliever Andrew Eppenbach (1-0) got the win. He pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Shane Kelso got the last two outs for his first save.

Kelly had Harding's only two-hit game, his eighth multi-hit game of the season, which included his third double.

Game 2
Harding matched its season-high scoring output in the second game, using a seven-run fourth inning to erase an early Oklahoma Baptist lead.

Harding sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning, which included four singles, two hit batters, three walks, including one intentional, two wild pitches and a passed ball. Luke Van Dover had a two-run single. Kelly and Butterfield also had RBI singles.

Harding had 13 hits in the game, 12 coming from its top five hitters. Miles Humphreys was 4-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs.  It was Humphreys's second four-hit game of the season and his third four-RBI game. Fertig was 3-for-3 with three runs. Van Dover had two hits and drove in three, reaching base for the 26th straight game. Butterfield had two hits and drove in two.

Ty Hoecker (3-0) pitched 6.0 innings to get the win. He gave up seven hits and three earned runs with one walk and four strikeouts. Zack Bilek struck out three in seventh to finish the game for the Bisons.

Oklahoma Baptist cycled through six pitchers in the second game. The second, Caleb Bly (1-4), took the loss, allowing all four batters faced to score.

Harding will be back in action Tuesday with a nonconference game at Union in Jackson, Tennessee.
