Harding Shuts Down Northwestern, Earns No. 4 Seed at GAC Tournament

SEARCY – Harding combined smothering defense and dominance on the boards to defeat Northwestern Oklahoma 70-47 Saturday in its final Great American Conference regular season game of the season at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House.

With the victory, Harding improved to 20-8 overall and 15-7 in the GAC. The Lady Bisons will be the No. 4 seed in the GAC Tournament, which begins next week in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Harding will play No. 5 seed Henderson State on Friday, March 8, at noon.

Harding limited Northwestern to only 23 percent (14 of 61) shooting and led by as many as 20 points early in the third quarter. Harding held a 47-31 rebound advantage.

Northwestern closed the gap to only seven at 45-38 on a Jakeria Otey 3-pointer.

Harding's lead was 49-42 with 7:42 left in the game, but the Lady Bisons went on a 12-0 run to pull away. Northwestern did not make a field goal in the fourth quarter until Bailey Brown's layup with 5:08 left.

Carissa Caples led Harding with 20 points, connecting on 8 of 12 shots. Cheyenne Brown scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Peyton Padgett had 12 rebounds and eight assists, and Kennedy Cooper had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Harding shot 47 percent and made 15 of 20 free throws. The Lady Bisons shot 8 of 13 (62 percent) in the fourth quarter.

Brown led Northwestern with 13 points and seven rebounds.
