A Comeback and a Shutout: Harding Sweeps Southern Nazarene

SEARCY – Harding used a comeback and a shutout to finish off a three-game Great American Conference series sweep of Southern Nazarene Saturday at Jerry Moore Field.

Harding erased a three-run deficit to win 8-5 in game one and scattered six Southern Nazarene hits in a 4-0 shutout in game two.

Harding ran its winning streak to five games and improved to 19-11 overall and 11-7 in the GAC. The Bisons are fifth in the conference standings and three games ahead of seventh-place Southwestern Oklahoma. The top six teams in the regular season qualify for the GAC Tournament in May.

Southern Nazarene had its GAC losing streak move to 13 games and fell to 5-21 overall and 1-17 in conference.

Game 1
Trailing 5-2 after three innings, Harding closed the gap to one run on Brendan Perrett's two-out, two-run double in the fourth. The Bisons continued to trail until the bottom of the eighth.

Harding scored four runs in the inning despite Nolan Fertig having the only hit, an RBI single. The Bisons also scored on a throwing error, a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, and on Luke Van Dover's sacrifice fly that gave Harding an 8-5 lead.

Ryder Yakel (3-2), who relieved started Logan McCall with one out in the sixth, got the win, but not without making things very interesting in the ninth. Yakel, who had only two unintentional walks all season, walked the bases loaded with no outs.

After a visit from head coach Dr. Patrick McGaha to catch his breath, Yakel retired the next three batters in order. By recording the last 11 outs, Yakel ran his streak to 28 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run.

Fertig and Van Dover both had two hits for Harding. Fertig had his fifth double, and Van Dover hit his team-leading 14th.

Game 2
Junior Ty Hoecker needed only 81 pitches for a seven-inning, complete game shutout in the second game. It was his second complete game this season and first career shutout. Hoecker gave up only one extra-base hit and moved to 4-0 on the season.

Connor Kelly singled with two outs to score Miles Humphreys and give Harding a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Harding broke it open with three more in the fourth. Perrett had an RBI single, Humphreys drove in a run on a ground out, and Van Dover laced his 15th double of the season off the wall in left to score Perrett with the third run. Van Dover has reached base in all 30 games this season.

Cole Lee (0-4) took the loss for Southern Nazarene. He yielded four runs on six hits and five walks over 5.0 innings.

Harding will go in search of win No. 20 Tuesday against Christian Brothers at USA Stadium in Millington, Tennessee. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
