Henderson State Defeats Harding 6-2 in Series Opener

SEARCY – Henderson State took advantage of two Harding errors and scored four runs in the seventh inning to defeat Harding 6-2 Friday in the first game of a three-game Great American Conference series at Jerry Moore Field.

The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. to conclude the series. A pregame ceremony honoring Harding's seniors begins at 1:40 p.m.

With the loss, Harding fell to 27-17 overall and 16-12 in GAC games but remained in fourth place. Henderson State moved to 21-20 and pulled within a half game of Harding at 15-12 in conference.

Harding took a 1-0 lead in the third on a two-out single to center by Luke Van Dover, scoring Brendan Perrett from second.

The Bisons held the lead until two errors in the sixth gave Henderson State a 2-1 lead. The Reddies tacked on four more runs on six hits in the seventh.

Harding's final run came in the bottom of the seventh on Eric Hansen's second home run of the season. Hansen, who missed much of the season with an injury, also doubled and tripled in the game and had three of Harding's five hits.

Harding starter Tanner Smith (5-5) went 6 1/3 innings and allowed only three earned runs. He gave up seven hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out four.

Henderson State's Austin Cross (3-2) yielded only four hits and one earned run over six innings. Kris Priddy earned a three-inning save, allowing only Hansen's home run and striking out five.
